It’s Women’s History Month and here at Qapital we’re feeling more emboldened than ever – because our mission to drive financial empowerment has never been more important. Around the world, the COVID-19 pandemic has disproportionately impacted women compared to men. Women are more likely to take on caretaker roles – which increased dramatically with school closures and reduced availability of outside help – even while working full-time. And they’re also more likely to hold essential services roles.&nbsp;<ul><li>The most <a href="https://www.unwomen.org/en/news/stories/2020/9/feature-covid-19-economic-impacts-on-women">COVID-impacted industries</a> employ more women – women are overrepresented in industries such as food service, retail and entertainment. 40% of all employed women work in hard-hit sectors.</li><li><a href="https://www.unwomen.org/en/news/stories/2020/9/feature-covid-19-economic-impacts-on-women">80% of domestic workers </a>are women and 72% of domestic workers have lost their jobs as a result of the pandemic.</li><li>Even prior to COVID-19, women spent an average of <a href="https://www.unwomen.org/en/news/stories/2020/9/feature-covid-19-economic-impacts-on-women">4.1 hours per day </a>performing unpaid work (domestic work and care) while men spent 1.7 hours. This amount of time has escalated with remote school or school closures.</li><li>Because of the pandemic, <a href="https://www.bbc.com/worklife/article/20201021-why-this-recession-disproportionately-affects-women">one in four women </a>said they were thinking about reducing or leaving paid work because of company inflexibility, caring responsibilities and stress.</li></ul>The global pandemic has only further exposed the many inequalities facing women today. At the same time, women are increasingly in charge of spending and investing decisions at home, with <a href="https://www.thestreet.com/personal-finance/women-are-the-new-cfo-of-the-household-14089470">over half</a> – 51% – reporting that they serve as household CFO.&nbsp; If women are going to achieve lasting financial independence, they need access to better tools and support. It’s why our co-founder Katherine Salisbury – fearless female and working mom of 4 – created Qapital with her own experience in mind. “The financial challenges facing women cannot be underestimated,” Katherine notes. “We’re increasingly the breadwinners but we’re also the caretakers. We’re constantly juggling and focused on the needs of those around us – our families, our partners, our children. How and where can money management fit into this picture? Benefits That Benefit Everyone

This past week has been a time of painful reflection and necessary discussion for every single one of us. Systemic racism against the black community stretches across healthcare, education, security and finance. There are so many tough questions that we as a society have failed to ask and answer. What can we do as individuals to effect change? What can we do as business leaders to address systemic racism? What can we do as organizations to make a difference? We’re listening to each other, to our users, and to society as a whole – and we’re making a commitment to help close the racial wealth gap. To start, we’ve made donations to the NAACP, the NAACP Legal Defense Fund and the ACLU because they are fighting for equality. We’re also looking inward to make changes to further uphold diversity and inclusion. And we’re more focused than ever on opening up access to tools and resources that can help close the racial wealth gap for good. How can we do better? We welcome ideas and actions. We know we don’t have the answers and these are just small steps forward. But we are committed to doing better as individuals, as a community, and as an organization. All Qapital services, including Master, Complete and Basic subscriptions, Qapital Goals, Qapital Invest, Payday Divvy, and Qapital Card are functioning normally. As always, our <a href="https://support.qapital.com/hc/en-us">customer service</a> team is on hand to answer any questions you might have.&nbsp; How do I set up an emergency fund? In your Qapital app’s Overview screen, tap on Select Goal. From there, you can navigate the prompts manually, or scroll down to the pre-set Emergency Fund goal. You’ll be able to customize every aspect, from the goal amount, to when you imagine needing it, and whether it’s shared with someone else.&nbsp; I have money saved with Qapital; can I shift the Goal to become an emergency fund? Yes! To change an existing goal’s purpose, find it on your Overview screen, tap on it, then click the three dots in the top right-hand corner, and select Edit Goal. Here, you’ll be able to easily edit the name, display image, goal sum and target date for your goal. All existing rules will remain in place, though you can edit those too at any time.&nbsp;Do you have recommendations on how to weather this period of financial uncertainty? When faced with challenges, we often turn to behavioral economics for answers. Taking human nature into account, and considering the importance of saving and investing as long-term financial health strategies, our Chief Behavioral Economist <a href="https://www.qapital.com/blog/dan-arielys-advice-for-investors-in-volatile-markets/">Dan Ariely</a> recommends* the following:<ul><li>Keep saving as much as possible, and be specific: If you are able to continue saving, we encourage you to do so. This, in addition to specifying what you’re saving towards – whether it’s an emergency fund, or that kitchen renovation you plan to kick off when life returns to normal – is going to help you stay on track.</li><li>Buy &amp; hold should be your investment mantra: Temporary volatility can get you down, but remember that investing is a long-term game. If you plan to use the money you’ve invested years from now, then volatile markets this week, this month or even this year shouldn’t be of much consequence to your long-term Goals.</li><li>Don’t make decisions out of fear: “Don’t make market decisions when your head is clouded by emotions,” says Dan, referring to the emotional state often brought on by checking the stock market repeatedly.
